Tickets Now Available! Pulitzer-Prize Winning Author David Oshinsky:


Pulitzer-Prize winning author David Oshinsky will speak at a special fundraising event for the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library on August 22nd at the Kennebunk River Club Casino.  A welcome reception begins at 5:30 catered by Downeast Wine Imports and Kitchen Chicks.

Oshinsky, a leading historian of modern American politics and society, won the Pulitzer Prize for History and the Hoover Presidential Book Award for his book, Polio : An American Story.  The New York Times, the News Hour with Jim Lehrer and National Public Radio celebrated the book, which details America’s battle with polio and intense search for a cure.  Publisher’s Weekly hailed it as “an edifying description of one of the most significant public health successes in U.S. History.”

Oshinsky has also authored A Conspiracy So Immense : the World of Joe McCarthy, which earned the Hardeman Prize for the best book about the history of Congress and Worse Than Slavery : Parchman Farm and the Ordeal of Jim Crow Justice, which won the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award for its distinguished contribution to human rights.  The New York Times named each a “notable book of the year.”

One hundred percent of the proceeds from Mr. Oshinsky’s appearance benefit the Graves Library.  Tickets are $40 per person.  Seating for the event is limited.  The suggested price includes the pre-event reception catered by Kitchen Chicks and Downeast Wine Imports.  The Graves Library, which is listed on the National Historic Register, recently celebrated its 100th anniversary in its current location.  It includes a remarkable array of literature and art and a colorful evolution from private to public library for the benefit of four generations of year-round residents and summer visitors.  The Library offers more than 200 programs for individuals of all ages and is open 43.5 hours per week to service the residents of Kennebunkport and surrounding area, and thousands of visitors from all over the world.

About Graves Library

I am a public library located in southern Maine. I am open 42 hours per week and serve over 6,000 patrons. The Library collaborates with others to meet the needs of the entire community for education, information, recreation, and communication. Residents of the towns of Kennebunkport, Kennebunk, Cape Porpoise, Wells, or Arundel, Maine (including general area) are welcome to a free Library Card. Non-Residents are also welcome to a temporary card for a fee of $20.00 (deposit). At the end of the stay, the non-resident may request their deposit be returned as long as the account is clear of any fines and all materials have been safely returned to the Library.
